Why are North and South Table Mountains so flat? What’s up with all those rock fins on the back-nine at Fossil Trace Golf Course? What are those white stripes along the sharp ridge west of State Hwy-93 to Boulder? Were there ever any dinosaurs in Golden? Where did those round rocks in the Armory Building come from? Did anyone ever find any gold in Golden? Did you know that Golden was a mining town from 1870 through the 1950s? And\, that most of the public open space in and around Golden has its roots in mining? What was mined here? \nThis trip will address these questions and more by unraveling the tapestry of the Golden landscape. You will discover the origins of what you are walking or cycling by\, driving across\, golfing over\, or simply just seeing every day when you walk out of your home. You will learn the story behind Golden’s good drinking water. You will learn how Golden’s early settlers used their local rock materials to build Golden and Denver\, a legacy that still provokes controversy. \nLogistics Summary: \nThe group will assemble and be ready to start the trip at 9:00 am on Sunday morning\, October 1st\, parking on the street along Shelton Road close to the intersection with Eagle Ridge Drive in Golden. This will be an approximately 5-mile long bicycle tour\, mostly downhill\, along mostly paved bike paths\, with stops at outcrops and other sites of interest. Bikes will go through two tunnels (underpasses) and will be walked over gravel trails on two occasions. The return trip to the cars will be largely uphill\, and is also approximately 5 miles. The bike path will be open to the public\, so participants are expected to follow safe cycling practices – announce your presence when passing slower riders or pedestrians\, do not speed out of control\, be aware of other participants and trail users\, and park off to the side of the trail when stopped. Participants are required to wear cycling helmets for their own safety; taillights are recommended. This will NOT be a difficult bike ride\, as the bikes are for transportation more than exercise in this case. The pace will be slow enabling the leader to stop to discuss items of interest and to keep the group together. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunches\, which will be enjoyed at a stop in new Loveland Mine Park. If you are interested in meeting folks in other clubs\, learning about claim\nmanagement\, or simply just doing a service to the clubs and our public land\, this is a fun day!\nWe will start with walking the claims’ boundaries and ensuring the posts are in good shape\, painting and\nadding any detailed working to the signs. We will fill in holes\nas needed. From this point\, we can then have fun digging (and\nfilling in when you are done) on the claims. \nMeeting Point\nWe will be meeting folks in Deckers. The Deckers address is\nthe parking lot just to the north of Decker’s Corner restaurant. \nDifficulty\nEASY. Parking is on the claims and there are few hills. We\nwill be filling holes so some effort is required. Elevation is\nabout 8\,150 to 8\,350 feet. We’re about 9.8 miles from\nDeckers. The closest bathroom is in Deckers\, come\nprepared. You are about an hour from the nearest gas station\,\nfill er up! This is a maintained forest service road and 2WD with\nnormal clearance will get you there. (see map on next page) \nTools recommended\nShovel\, rake and/or pick for reclamation. Shovel\, pick\,\nrock hammer\, paintbrush\, screwdriver for digging and\nextracting crystals. \nHazards\nLightning\, dehydration\, blisters\, exhaustion from\ndigging and elevation. \nWhat to collect\nThe claims are located in Jefferson County. We will be\nable to collect Smoky Quartz\, Clear Druzy Quartz\, Multicolored Fluorite (some fluorescent and some are\nphosphorescent!)\, Amazonite\, Feldspar\, Microcline\,\nClevelandite\, Topaz. You should also be able to collect\nsome new friends and have a ton of fun!

And even when volume estimates are relatively accurate\, the reservoir characteristics that determine well placement and performance can remain highly uncertain. \nEven more important than minimizing error\, is avoiding bias. Programmatic overestimation of success rates and volumes can put a company out of business. Underestimating leads to the regret of significant missed opportunities. Especially in exploration\, one should expect to be disappointed; but you should never be surprised. \nContext matters too. For example\, exploration play maturity has a strong influence on performance. Generally\, chance of success increased and prospect success case volumes decreased with play maturity. For very mature plays\, success rate decreased again. So\, optimizing the efficient frontier\, on a risk-reward basis\, ensures a diverse and successful portfolio.  \nSeismic technologies also have had a significant influence on success rates. Wildcats drilled based on 3D seismic data had about a +10% higher success rate than those based on 2D data.  \nFor improved decision making\, incorporating subsurface uncertainty into economic evaluations is critical. Expected Monetary Value (EMV) is an especially useful approach to address uncertainty. \nAnother consideration is the impact of technical or business dependencies. These tend to be underappreciated and can result in a wider range of outcomes. Such dependencies are important in considering aggregate assets\, when linkages can reduce the protection afforded by the portfolio effect.  \nThese principles and work practices of using scenario-weighted economic analyses will be demonstrated using an example from a deep-water West Africa oil prospect/development (Girassol). Based on ample public domain data\, Girassol illustrates the application of probability-weighted economics across a spectrum of business stages. \nBio: \nKurt Rudolph received a B.S. in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.A. in Geology from the University of Texas.  He began his career as an Exploration Geologist with Unocal in 1978\, until he joined Exxon Production Research in 1981.  He held a variety of positions at Exxon/ExxonMobil\, including Research Geologist\, Chief Interpreter in Kuala Lumpur\, Technical Advisor for the Africa and Middle East Region\, and Hydrocarbon Systems Resource Manager. From 2002 until his retirement in 2015\, he was Chief Geoscientist with ExxonMobil Exploration Company in Houston.
