Ideally\, the injection is evenly distributed across the fracture network to promote uniform thermal drawdown; however\, fracture variability and wellbore friction can concentrate flow in high-conductivity pathways or heel-biased stages\, reducing sweep efficiency and accelerating thermal breakthrough. Modeling indicates conformance control providing uniform injection can increase 30-year power generation by 50%. This presentation summarizes surface qualification testing by GTO Technologies of a second-generation casing sleeve\, pump-down actuation system\, and high-temperature tractor designed to deliver uniform EGS injection independent of fracture conductivity. The system preserves full inner diameter from heel to toe and avoids telescoping ball seats while providing regulated flow through an outflow control device. The larger casing inner diameter also reduces parasitic pumping losses from wellbore friction and supports higher injection rates at lower pressures.

SUMMARY:RMS-SEPM September 29th Luncheon: Deepwater Fan Giants and Mountains of Mud: A Caribbean Kaleidoscope of Ancient Seascapes and Hidden Continents
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or online as Lesli Wood\, Colorado School of Mines & SEPM President presents: \nThe southeastern Caribbean Margin has been tectonically active throughout much of\nthe Miocene to present with the Caribbean plate obducting the Atlantic plate to the east\,\nand obliquely colliding with the South American plate to the south. Mix in two of the\nlargest continent-draining river systems in the world; the Orinoco and the Amazon\nRivers\, and you have huge sedimentation rates over-filling the basin\, generating\nenormous mass failure\, and over-pressuring the subsurface to build mountain of mud\non the seafloor. All of these elements interact to produce an area of the world that is\nlikely the most sedimentologically dynamic of anywhere on Earth. A mega-merge of\n~50\,000 sq km of 3D seismic data\, some of which reaches nearly 33\,000 m (100\,000\nfeet) deep\, is enabling us to view the seismic geomorphologic evolution of this\nenigmatic and energy rich province as never before. Extensional faults\, mobile mud\nwithdrawal and transtensional pull-apart processes produce enormous amounts of\naccommodation. This accommodation has been filled for the past 15 million years by\ndeltaic progradation\, tectonic-activity and over-accumulation triggered mass failures\,\nand alongshore-current transported sediments. This talk will visit the processes and\ndeposits of a basin that does not play by passive margin rules. Where leveed channels\nweave their way 250 km basinward through extremely complex and enormous seafloor\ntopography to deposit in the Orinoco Fan. This region holds the entire post-Cretaceous\nhistory of the northern South American continent. Although its complexity has baffled\ngeoscientists for 100 years\, new data are revealing its secrets.

By combining physics-based hydraulic fracturing\, geomechanics\, and reservoir simulation across the Bakken and Permian Basin\, we show that refrac outcomes are highly predictable—achieving blind-test forecasts that matched actual one-year production uplifts with an average mismatch of just 3.7%. Model sensitivity analysis shows that short-term refrac gains are driven by pre-refrac recovery factors and well age\, while long-term EUR uplift is governed by infill well distance\, overall well spacing\, and original cluster spacing. Poroelastic stress changes from depletion play overprint refrac performance\, as uneven stress profiles cause fluid to simply reactivate old fractures instead of creating fresh rock surface. Economic optimization shows that the “right” refrac design is a function of depletion and fracture height containment. The easy refrac candidates are older wells with wide original cluster spacing\, large unstimulated lateral gaps\, low recovery factors\, and wide well spacing – we show that there is opportunity in less obvious candidates when evaluated carefully! \nBio: \nGarrett Fowler is Chief Operating Officer at ResFrac\, where he leads global business strategy\, commercial operations\, and professional services across shale\, geothermal\, and CCUS projects. An engineer himself\, Garrett has performed and directed studies in every major shale basin worldwide. Prior to ResFrac\, he held reservoir engineering roles at Oxy and Tachyus\, focusing on EOR and waterflooding. Garrett graduated with distinction from Stanford University with a BS in Energy Resources Engineering and an MS in Petroleum Engineering. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 technical papers\, earned the 2022 SPE Regional Completions Optimization and Technology Award\, and is an Eagle Scout\, search and rescue diver\, and multi-time Ironman finisher.
