SUMMARY:RMAG: Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hybrid lunch in September. Sign up for in-person or online options above.\n\nDate: September 13\, 2023\nTime: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm\n\nLocation:  Show map\nDenver Earth Resources Library\n730 17th Street B1\nDenver\, CO 80202\nUnited States\n\n\nTalk Title: “Estimating\, Benchmarking and Managing Subsurface Uncertainty: Principles and Examples” \nSpeaker: Kurt Rudolph\, University of Houston and Rice University \nSubsurface risk and uncertainty are recognized as very important considerations in petroleum geoscience. And even when volume estimates are relatively accurate\, the reservoir characteristics that determine well placement and performance can remain highly uncertain. \nEven more important than minimizing error\, is avoiding bias. Programmatic overestimation of success rates and volumes can put a company out of business. Underestimating leads to the regret of significant missed opportunities. Especially in exploration\, one should expect to be disappointed; but you should never be surprised. \nContext matters too. For example\, exploration play maturity has a strong influence on performance. Generally\, chance of success increased and prospect success case volumes decreased with play maturity. For very mature plays\, success rate decreased again. So\, optimizing the efficient frontier\, on a risk-reward basis\, ensures a diverse and successful portfolio.  \nSeismic technologies also have had a significant influence on success rates. Wildcats drilled based on 3D seismic data had about a +10% higher success rate than those based on 2D data.  \nFor improved decision making\, incorporating subsurface uncertainty into economic evaluations is critical. Expected Monetary Value (EMV) is an especially useful approach to address uncertainty. \nAnother consideration is the impact of technical or business dependencies. These tend to be underappreciated and can result in a wider range of outcomes. Such dependencies are important in considering aggregate assets\, when linkages can reduce the protection afforded by the portfolio effect.  \nThese principles and work practices of using scenario-weighted economic analyses will be demonstrated using an example from a deep-water West Africa oil prospect/development (Girassol). Based on ample public domain data\, Girassol illustrates the application of probability-weighted economics across a spectrum of business stages. \nBio: \nKurt Rudolph received a B.S. in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.A. in Geology from the University of Texas.  He began his career as an Exploration Geologist with Unocal in 1978\, until he joined Exxon Production Research in 1981.  He held a variety of positions at Exxon/ExxonMobil\, including Research Geologist\, Chief Interpreter in Kuala Lumpur\, Technical Advisor for the Africa and Middle East Region\, and Hydrocarbon Systems Resource Manager. From 2002 until his retirement in 2015\, he was Chief Geoscientist with ExxonMobil Exploration Company in Houston. Since then\, Kurt has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston and Rice University. \nHis interests include seismic attributes/DHI analysis\, risking and assessment\, sequence stratigraphy\, and tectonics and sedimentation.  Current research includes the Cretaceous Western Interior\, Paleozoic orogenic systems of North America and northern Europe\, and integrating subsurface uncertainty into assessment and economic analysis. He won Wallace Pratt Awards for the best AAPG Bulletin paper in 1994 and 2017\, was an AAPG-SEG Distinguished Lecturer for 2001-2002\, was the AAPG Michael Halbouty Lecturer for 2007\, won best paper award for the Mountain Geologist (RMAG) in 2015\, and will be an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer for 2023-2024.   \nDownload full Abstract & Bio \nHybrid luncheon schedule: \n\n11:15am: In-person check-in opens\n11:30: Lunch service begins\n12:00pm: Online event opens\n12:15pm: Talk begins\n1:00pm: Talk/Q&A session ends; Online event closes\n\nHybrid Luncheon costs: \n\nMember Lunch: $30\nNon-Member Lunch: $35\nWalk-in without Lunch: $15\nMember Online: $10\nNon-member Online: $20\nStudent online: Free\n\nRefund policy: \nIf you need to cancel an in-person lunch registration for any reason\, you must do so by 4:00pm on the Thursday before the Wednesday luncheon. SUMMARY:RMAG: Bicycle Golden Geology Tour
DESCRIPTION:ON THE ROCKS PRESENTS\nGOLDEN GEOHISTORY BICYCLE TOUR\nOctober 1\, 2023 \nTrip Leader: Dr. Donna Anderson\nHave you ever wondered how the landscape around the City of Golden came to be? Why are North and South Table Mountains so flat? What’s up with all those rock fins on the back-nine at Fossil Trace Golf Course? What are those white stripes along the sharp ridge west of State Hwy-93 to Boulder? Were there ever any dinosaurs in Golden? Where did those round rocks in the Armory Building come from? Did anyone ever find any gold in Golden? Did you know that Golden was a mining town from 1870 through the 1950s? And\, that most of the public open space in and around Golden has its roots in mining? What was mined here? \nThis trip will address these questions and more by unraveling the tapestry of the Golden landscape. You will discover the origins of what you are walking or cycling by\, driving across\, golfing over\, or simply just seeing every day when you walk out of your home. You will learn the story behind Golden’s good drinking water. You will learn how Golden’s early settlers used their local rock materials to build Golden and Denver\, a legacy that still provokes controversy. \nLogistics Summary: \nThe group will assemble and be ready to start the trip at 9:00 am on Sunday morning\, October 1st\, parking on the street along Shelton Road close to the intersection with Eagle Ridge Drive in Golden. This will be an approximately 5-mile long bicycle tour\, mostly downhill\, along mostly paved bike paths\, with stops at outcrops and other sites of interest. Bikes will go through two tunnels (underpasses) and will be walked over gravel trails on two occasions. The return trip to the cars will be largely uphill\, and is also approximately 5 miles. The bike path will be open to the public\, so participants are expected to follow safe cycling practices – announce your presence when passing slower riders or pedestrians\, do not speed out of control\, be aware of other participants and trail users\, and park off to the side of the trail when stopped. Participants are required to wear cycling helmets for their own safety; taillights are recommended. This will NOT be a difficult bike ride\, as the bikes are for transportation more than exercise in this case. The pace will be slow enabling the leader to stop to discuss items of interest and to keep the group together. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunches\, which will be enjoyed at a stop in new Loveland Mine Park. The trip will officially end at a stop along Clear Creek\, after which participants are invited to join in an adult beverage (perhaps at Golden City Brewery)\, a coffee\, or can ride back to the cars. \nDownload Trip Details and Logistics \nCost\n\n$20 Members\n$25 Non-Members (not a member? Join Today!)\n\nRefunds for the Golden GeoHistory Bicycle Tour are available until September 18th. After September 18th\, if you can no longer attend you can transfer your registration to another attendee or forfeit the trip costs.

SUMMARY:RMAG: Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US FOR A HYBRID LUNCH IN OCTOBER. SIGN UP FOR IN-PERSON OR ONLINE OPTIONS ABOVE.\nTalk Title: Effects of variation in mechanical rock properties on fracture type and gradient \nSpeaker: Elizabeth S Petrie\, Western Colorado University \nFluid cycling and fracture permeability in the brittle crust is important to groundwater flow\, waste storage\, dissemination of minerals and the migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons. Subsurface injection of large-volume\, high-pressure fluids is integral to development of unconventional resources\, fluid disposal and enhanced geothermal production. As injection technologies improve and are deployed at a large scale\, societal impacts and safety considerations require site-specific risk assessments. \nMechanical failure in rocks is a function of cohesive\, tensile\, and frictional strengths and the current and historic in situ stress. In this talk\, results from laboratory testing of analog clastic rocks are used to determine modified Coulomb-Griffith failure envelopes. Laboratory results show the maximum pressures each intact rock type can withstand and how these types of analyses can be used in risk assessments to better constrain the conditions under which mechanical failure can occur. These results illustrate how lateral and vertical anisotropy including lithological changes\, the presence of fractures\, or structural diagenesis associated with faults will result in variations in failure envelopes and fracture gradients. \nBio: \nElizabeth S. Petrie is the Moncrief Chair in Petroleum Geology and Professor of Geology at Western Colorado University. She has B.S. degrees in geology and biology from the University of New Mexico\, an M.S. degree and a Ph.D. in geology from Utah State University and worked as a petroleum geologist for 7 years. Since 2014\, she has been a professor at Western Colorado University where she actively involves undergraduate students in research projects that focus on structural geology\, rock mechanics\, and fracture development. \nDr. Petrie studies deformation of the Earth’s crust and how this deformation influences and is influenced by the movement of fluids in the subsurface. Her research combines quantitative observation from outcrop\, laboratory experiments and subsurface data sets to understand the formation and distribution of fractures and fault zones and the role variations in rock mechanical properties have on failure across many scales of observation. Her research is applicable to a variety of topics including: understanding earthquake processes\, the distribution of energy and mineral resources\, and the subsurface storage of carbon dioxide or other waste materials. \nDownload full Abstract & Bio \nHybrid luncheon schedule: \n\n11:15am: In-person check-in opens\n11:30: Lunch service begins\n12:00pm: Online event opens\n12:15pm: Talk begins\n1:00pm: Talk/Q&A session ends; Online event closes\n\nHybrid Luncheon costs: \n\nMember Lunch: $35\nNon-Member Lunch: $40\nWalk-in without Lunch: $15\nMember Online: $10\nNon-member Online: $20\nStudent online: Free\n\nRefund policy: \nIf you need to cancel an in-person lunch registration for any reason\, you must do so by 4:00pm on the Thursday before the Wednesday luncheon. SUMMARY:RMAG: OIL AND GAS PROPERTY VALUATION
DESCRIPTION:RMAG SHORT COURSE\nOIL AND GAS PROPERTY VALUTATION\nINSTRUCTOR: NICHOLAS KERNAN\, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR\nOctober 24\, 2023\n8:00 am to 4:00 pm\nDenver Earth Resources Library\, 730 17th St\, B1 Denver CO 80202\nAbout this course: \nThe valuation of oil and gas properties is one of the most important skills within the energy sector. This course aims to introduce individuals to a basic workflow that will allow them to take raw data and develop an opinion of value for oil and gas acreage. The focus will be on-shore U.S. unconventional resources. Valuations will be considered from both the standpoint of operators and royalty owners. Topics to be discussed are the role of geology in valuations\, forecasting production\, commodity prices\, development plans\, defining risk\, quantifying uncertainty\, using comparable sales\, and the construction of discounted cash flows. All of these topics could be a course in their own right and this workshop does not aim to make participants experts in any one of the above topics. Rather\, it aims to bring all these concepts together in a practical workflow. It should also help give technical experts context of how their day-to-day work affects business decisions. This is an introductory class and is not meant for individuals that are already familiar with oil and gas property valuation. The class requires participants to bring their own computer since many of the exercises will involve building cash flows in Excel. \nWho will teach: \nNicholas (Nico) Kernan is a geologist and mineral rights appraiser within the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI). During his time with DOI\, Nico has participated in dozens of oil and gas property valuations involving federal and Indian lands in Oklahoma\, North Dakota\, New Mexico\, and Colorado. Before that\, he worked for Devon Energy as a development geologist\, and for ExxonMobil supporting the generation of play assessments and 3D geo-cellular models. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and a Master’s degree from the Colorado School of Mines. \nRegistration Details \n\n$250 for Members\n$300 for Non Members (not a member? join today)\n\nRegistration Closes October 19th \nRefunds for the October 24th course are only available until October 10th. \n\nIf you are unable to attend\, your registration for all RMAG events are transferable. RMAG members may transfer their registration to another RMAG member\, and non-members can transfer their registrations to whomever they wish. Should an RMAG member wish to transfer their registration to a non-member\, the non-member would need to pay the balance between the member and non-member price. \n\nThank you to the RMAG Foundation for their continued support of the RMAG Continuing Education programming

SUMMARY:RMAG: NON-CONVENTIONAL GEOMECHANICS FOR UNCONVENTIONAL RESOURCES
DESCRIPTION:SHORT COURSE\nNON-CONVENTIONAL GEOMECHANICS FOR UNCONVENTIONAL RESOURCES\nDecember 12\, 2023\, 8:00 AM to 4:00pm\, December 13\, 2023\, 8:00am to 4:00pm\nDenver Earth Resources Library \n730 17th Street\, B1\, Denver\, Co\nCourse Instructor: Dr. Hamed Soroush\nAbout this Course\nNowadays\, unconventional resources of gas have been brought into the forefront of the energy future due to the increase in demand of hydrocarbon and decline of production from conventional reservoirs. Due to low permeability of shale gas reservoirs\, production at commercial level requires conducting horizontal drilling technology and applying effective hydraulic fracturing. Therefore\, successful production from such complex reservoirs is heavily dependent on the stress regime and requires sufficient geomechanical analyses. \nGeomechanics is an essential component of production from both conventional and unconventional reservoirs; however\, geomechanics for unconventional resources is to some extend different from conventional reservoirs due to intricacy imposed by inelastic matrix behavior\, stress sensitivity\, existence of cleats and natural fractures\, rock rheology\, and different pressure-temperature environments. This course discusses the geomechanical aspects of unconventional resources and how it adds value to the development of this type of reservoirs. \nSee the full course content below. \nWho will teach\nDr Hamed Soroush is an internationally recognized geomechanics expert with extensive experience in different applications of rock mechanics in oil and gas\, geothermal and CCS projects. He has conducted or managed more than 300 consulting and research projects worldwide. Dr Soroush is the CEO of TEVERRA based in Atlanta\, GA. Prior to that\, he held various positions with companies such as Dong Energy\, Shell\, PDVSA\, Weatherford\, Senergy\, GMI\, and CSIRO in different locations globally. Hamed holds BSc in Mining Engineering\, MSc in Rock Mechanics and PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University of Technology in Australia. He has given different industry short courses for SPE\, AAPG and EAGE and has served as steering committee on several SPE and EAGE conferences and workshops. He served as SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2012-2013\, 2017-2018\, and 2020-2021 programs. \nWho should attend\n\nDrilling\, reservoir\, completion\, exploitation\, and production engineers\nGeoscientists\, geologists\, geophysicists\, and petrophysicists\nField development managers\, technical advisors\, core lab personnel\n\nWhat you will learn\nThis is an interactive course including three modules: Geomechanical Modeling\, wellbore stability and hydraulic fracturing. In the first part\, the importance of geomechanics in the development of unconventional resources will be discussed. Constructing 1D to 4D geomechanical models using geology and drilling information\, well logs and core data from off-set wells is the major part of this section of the course. How to calibrate and validate the model with regional stress and rock strength data will also be discussed. The second part focuses on chemical wellbore stability analysis and drilling risk identification/mitigation. The last section discusses hydraulic fracturing design and modeling\, and completion design optimization. The differences between geomechanical analysis in conventional and unconventional reservoirs will be explained and special attention will be paid to rock anisotropy. The last part of the course will be an interactive hands-on session constructing a geomechanical model using Excel. \nWhat you will receive\nParticipants in the course will receive: \n\nA detailed course manual including all presented material\nWorkbook and Excel sheets with Case Studies\nUp-to-date reference lists on all topics covered in the course\nCollection of Relevant Technical Papers\n\nRegistration Details\n\n$400 for Members\n$500 for Non Members (not a member? join today)\n\nRegistration Closes December 8th \nRefunds for the December 12th and 13th course are only available until November 28th.
