SUMMARY:SPE General Meeting: Developing Polycrystalline Diamond Cutter (PDC) For Hard Rock and Geothermal Drilling
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe invention of diamond synthesis in the 1950s led to polycrystalline diamond \ncutters (PDC) that revolutionized oil and gas drilling. Early PDCs worked only for \nshort intervals in soft formations\, but technological advances extended their \nreach in harder rock\, boosting U.S. shale drilling efficiency almost threefold over \nthe last two decades. Effective problem-solving at the dull bit level with good \ndrilling context improved PDC reliability\, and these advancements now benefit \ngeothermal energy projects where PDCs remain highly cost-effective. This talk \nwill highlight strategies for increasing PDC performance in hard rock\, including \ngranite\, through identifying and addressing root-cause failure modes in a \ncollaborative process. \nBiography: \nNeil has been part of the effort at US Synthetic to improve the strength\, \ntoughness and thermal stability of polycrystalline diamond cutters (PDC) for the \noil and gas industry for over 20 years. He has worked closely with PDC bit \nmanufacturers throughout the world\, testing and developing PDC’s for drilling in \nchallenging formations. He has extensive experience in cutter forensics and \ncurrently works with a team of scientists and engineers to develop products that \nhelp the industry drill more efficiently in hard rock\, including geothermal \nformations. Neil received a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering \nfrom Brigham Young University and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

SUMMARY:SPE General Meeting: Modern Open Hole Wireline Operations: Safer\, More Efficient Outcomes with Proactive\, Holistic Planning
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nOpen hole wireline logging continues to be the preferred\, cost-effective method of formation \nevaluation in our industry. But as wellbore geometry\, trajectory\, and logging objectives become \nmore complex\, the longer and heavier logging tool strings introduce greater deployment risks\, \noperational uncertainty\, and costs. \nTraditional wireline logging job planning based on tension simulations is no longer sufficient \nbecause other hazards can be left undetected with potentially costly consequences. \nThis lecture presents a modern-holistic methodology\, already widely adopted\, that integrates \nwellbore geometry\, trajectory\, formation properties\, operational requirements\, and insights \nfrom databases of historical wireline jobs that include well designs and operational outcomes. \nAttendees will gain understanding of a data-driven framework for evaluating deployment risks\, \nincluding quantifying differential and mechanical sticking\, along with practical guidance for \nsafer and more reliable wireline operations. \nBio: \nLee holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve \nUniversity and has completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business LEAD \nprogram. He began his career as a wireline engineer and has spent more than two \ndecades supporting operations globally\, including the Rocky Mountains\, Southeast \nAsia\, the Marcellus\, the Gulf of America\, Mexico\, the Caribbean and the North Sea. \nSince joining Gaia in 2011\, his work has focused on strengthening wireline job design \nand execution by developing practical frameworks\, modeling approaches\, and field \nmethods for challenging wells. He has provided wellsite QA/QC support on more than \n175 field operations and has contributed to the creation and refinement of several of the \nplanning and risk-assessment workflows highlighted in this talk. Lee has authored \ntechnical papers and frequently delivers in-house training on applying systematic\, \nmodel-based strategies to improve wireline performance.

SUMMARY:RMS-SEPM Fall Field Trip: Paint Mines Interpretive Park
DESCRIPTION:Paint Mines Interpretive Park\, located in east-central Colorado near Calhan\, is home to towering hoodoos\, colorful fluvial and pedogenic deposits\, and a rich archaeological history. Mother Nature Network included Paint Mines as one of the twelve most colorful natural wonders on Earth\, and not to be missed! \nDuring this one-day field trip\, we will examine two sequences of synorogenic deposits. Lignites and fluvial sandstone from the Cretaceous to Paleocene D1 Sequence are overlain by mudstones\, paleosols\, and fluvial and overbank deposits of the latest Paleocene to early Eocene D2 Sequence. An unconformity spanning 8 million years separates the sequences. We will discuss the two pulses of Laramide mountain building\, with episodic displacement along thrust faults bounding the Front Range\, that are recorded in these sequences. Another focus will be the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)\, which took place approximately 56 million years ago and occurs within the D2 Sequence. \nThis will be a family-friendly trip along mostly flat trails. Running shoes or sandals are perfectly adequate footwear. Be aware that after a rain\, trails can be muddy. \nCarpooling is highly recommended. One group will leave the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at 8:30 a.m. and another group will leave the Light Rail Station at Santa Fe and Mineral at 8:45 a.m. Be prepared for a 1.5 to 2 hour drive one way. If you prefer to drive on your own\, please meet at the main (north) parking lot at 29950 Paint Mine Road NO LATER than 11:00 a.m. This is the only Park location with restrooms. \nBring your own lunch\, snacks\, and plenty of water or sports drinks. No water is available in the Park. Be prepared for hot and dry and/or cool and rainy weather. Sunscreen\, sun hat\, long-sleeved shirt if sun sensitive\, rain jacket\, and a light fleece or sweatshirt are recommended. Rock hammers are NOT allowed in the Park. We anticipate the trip will take approximately 3 to 4 hours before heading back to Denver. \nCost is $25 for RMS-SEPM members\, $30 for nonmembers\, and $10 for additional family members and students. Proceeds will be used for the RMS-SEPM student scholarship funds.

SUMMARY:SPE Technical Happy Hour: Predictive Modeling\, Sensitivity Analysis\, and Economic Optimization of Well Refracturing in the Bakken and Permian Basin
DESCRIPTION:Host: Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent: October 2026 Technical Happy Hour \nTime: October 13th\, 4-6pm (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, more Social until 6) \nLocation: Liberty Energy\, 950 17th St\, Suite 2400\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nSponsor: Liberty Energy \nStudy Group Category: Reservoir and Completions \nSpeaker: Garrett Fowler\, Chief Operating Officer\, ResFrac \nTitle: Predictive Modeling\, Sensitivity Analysis\, and Economic Optimization of Well Refracturing in the Bakken and Permian Basin \nAbstract: \nRefracturing depleted unconventional wells can yield low(er) capital\, high ROI inventory\, but unpredictable field results can challenge planning and budget justification. By combining physics-based hydraulic fracturing\, geomechanics\, and reservoir simulation across the Bakken and Permian Basin\, we show that refrac outcomes are highly predictable—achieving blind-test forecasts that matched actual one-year production uplifts with an average mismatch of just 3.7%. Model sensitivity analysis shows that short-term refrac gains are driven by pre-refrac recovery factors and well age\, while long-term EUR uplift is governed by infill well distance\, overall well spacing\, and original cluster spacing. Poroelastic stress changes from depletion play overprint refrac performance\, as uneven stress profiles cause fluid to simply reactivate old fractures instead of creating fresh rock surface. Economic optimization shows that the “right” refrac design is a function of depletion and fracture height containment. The easy refrac candidates are older wells with wide original cluster spacing\, large unstimulated lateral gaps\, low recovery factors\, and wide well spacing – we show that there is opportunity in less obvious candidates when evaluated carefully! \nBio: \nGarrett Fowler is Chief Operating Officer at ResFrac\, where he leads global business strategy\, commercial operations\, and professional services across shale\, geothermal\, and CCUS projects. An engineer himself\, Garrett has performed and directed studies in every major shale basin worldwide. Prior to ResFrac\, he held reservoir engineering roles at Oxy and Tachyus\, focusing on EOR and waterflooding. Garrett graduated with distinction from Stanford University with a BS in Energy Resources Engineering and an MS in Petroleum Engineering. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 technical papers\, earned the 2022 SPE Regional Completions Optimization and Technology Award\, and is an Eagle Scout\, search and rescue diver\, and multi-time Ironman finisher.

SUMMARY:SPE General Meeting: What Petroleum Engineers Should Know About Climate Science
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nPetroleum Engineers should have a basic grasp of climate science. While alarmists in the media have caused many of us to tune-out\, the science can be quite interesting. This 30- minute presentation reviews the basic physics\, some learnings from paleo reconstruction\, recent temperature trends\, and then teaches how engineers can make their own future warming calculations. You may be surprised how similar are projections between the scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other well-known scientists branded as skeptics. Often missing from the climate narrative is perspective on climate shift versus natural weather variability\, for both temperature and storms. This presentation tries to frame this distinction for you so you can make up your own mind on urgency. The climate narrative will always be ubiquitous for the oil and gas business\, so hopefully by having a grasp on the science we engineers can better influence the narrative\, and quantitatively understand how our actions can be helpful. \nBiography: \nJohn Schopp\, SPE\, was Vice President at Encana for 15 years\, and then Senior Advisor to private equity company Blackstone Group for 5 years before retiring in 2021. He is a lifetime weather enthusiast\, and upon retirement found the time to read the 2400 page Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report as well as a number of books and technical articles on climate science. John penned the JPT article “Engineer Raises Climate Science Above the Din” in 2023 and recently taught an SPE Masterclass titled “Climate Science for Engineers”.

SUMMARY:RMS-SEPM September 29th Luncheon: Deepwater Fan Giants and Mountains of Mud: A Caribbean Kaleidoscope of Ancient Seascapes and Hidden Continents
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or online as Lesli Wood\, Colorado School of Mines & SEPM President presents: \nThe southeastern Caribbean Margin has been tectonically active throughout much of\nthe Miocene to present with the Caribbean plate obducting the Atlantic plate to the east\,\nand obliquely colliding with the South American plate to the south. Mix in two of the\nlargest continent-draining river systems in the world; the Orinoco and the Amazon\nRivers\, and you have huge sedimentation rates over-filling the basin\, generating\nenormous mass failure\, and over-pressuring the subsurface to build mountain of mud\non the seafloor. All of these elements interact to produce an area of the world that is\nlikely the most sedimentologically dynamic of anywhere on Earth. A mega-merge of\n~50\,000 sq km of 3D seismic data\, some of which reaches nearly 33\,000 m (100\,000\nfeet) deep\, is enabling us to view the seismic geomorphologic evolution of this\nenigmatic and energy rich province as never before. Extensional faults\, mobile mud\nwithdrawal and transtensional pull-apart processes produce enormous amounts of\naccommodation. This accommodation has been filled for the past 15 million years by\ndeltaic progradation\, tectonic-activity and over-accumulation triggered mass failures\,\nand alongshore-current transported sediments. This talk will visit the processes and\ndeposits of a basin that does not play by passive margin rules. Where leveed channels\nweave their way 250 km basinward through extremely complex and enormous seafloor\ntopography to deposit in the Orinoco Fan. This region holds the entire post-Cretaceous\nhistory of the northern South American continent. Although its complexity has baffled\ngeoscientists for 100 years\, new data are revealing its secrets.

SUMMARY:Denver SPE General Meeting: From Heel to Toe: Engineering Uniform EGS Injection
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nEGS circulates cooler water through hydraulically connected horizontal wells\, creating a subsurface heat exchanger. Ideally\, the injection is evenly distributed across the fracture network to promote uniform thermal drawdown; however\, fracture variability and wellbore friction can concentrate flow in high-conductivity pathways or heel-biased stages\, reducing sweep efficiency and accelerating thermal breakthrough. Modeling indicates conformance control providing uniform injection can increase 30-year power generation by 50%. This presentation summarizes surface qualification testing by GTO Technologies of a second-generation casing sleeve\, pump-down actuation system\, and high-temperature tractor designed to deliver uniform EGS injection independent of fracture conductivity. The system preserves full inner diameter from heel to toe and avoids telescoping ball seats while providing regulated flow through an outflow control device. The larger casing inner diameter also reduces parasitic pumping losses from wellbore friction and supports higher injection rates at lower pressures.
