SUMMARY:SPE Technical Happy Hour: Predictive Modeling\, Sensitivity Analysis\, and Economic Optimization of Well Refracturing in the Bakken and Permian Basin
DESCRIPTION:Host: Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent: October 2026 Technical Happy Hour \nTime: October 13th\, 4-6pm (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, more Social until 6) \nLocation: Liberty Energy\, 950 17th St\, Suite 2400\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nSponsor: Liberty Energy \nStudy Group Category: Reservoir and Completions \nSpeaker: Garrett Fowler\, Chief Operating Officer\, ResFrac \nTitle: Predictive Modeling\, Sensitivity Analysis\, and Economic Optimization of Well Refracturing in the Bakken and Permian Basin \nAbstract: \nRefracturing depleted unconventional wells can yield low(er) capital\, high ROI inventory\, but unpredictable field results can challenge planning and budget justification. By combining physics-based hydraulic fracturing\, geomechanics\, and reservoir simulation across the Bakken and Permian Basin\, we show that refrac outcomes are highly predictable—achieving blind-test forecasts that matched actual one-year production uplifts with an average mismatch of just 3.7%. Model sensitivity analysis shows that short-term refrac gains are driven by pre-refrac recovery factors and well age\, while long-term EUR uplift is governed by infill well distance\, overall well spacing\, and original cluster spacing. Poroelastic stress changes from depletion play overprint refrac performance\, as uneven stress profiles cause fluid to simply reactivate old fractures instead of creating fresh rock surface. Economic optimization shows that the “right” refrac design is a function of depletion and fracture height containment. The easy refrac candidates are older wells with wide original cluster spacing\, large unstimulated lateral gaps\, low recovery factors\, and wide well spacing – we show that there is opportunity in less obvious candidates when evaluated carefully! \nBio: \nGarrett Fowler is Chief Operating Officer at ResFrac\, where he leads global business strategy\, commercial operations\, and professional services across shale\, geothermal\, and CCUS projects. An engineer himself\, Garrett has performed and directed studies in every major shale basin worldwide. Prior to ResFrac\, he held reservoir engineering roles at Oxy and Tachyus\, focusing on EOR and waterflooding. Garrett graduated with distinction from Stanford University with a BS in Energy Resources Engineering and an MS in Petroleum Engineering. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 technical papers\, earned the 2022 SPE Regional Completions Optimization and Technology Award\, and is an Eagle Scout\, search and rescue diver\, and multi-time Ironman finisher.

SUMMARY:RMS-SEPM Fall Field Trip: Paint Mines Interpretive Park
DESCRIPTION:Paint Mines Interpretive Park\, located in east-central Colorado near Calhan\, is home to towering hoodoos\, colorful fluvial and pedogenic deposits\, and a rich archaeological history. Mother Nature Network included Paint Mines as one of the twelve most colorful natural wonders on Earth\, and not to be missed! \nDuring this one-day field trip\, we will examine two sequences of synorogenic deposits. Lignites and fluvial sandstone from the Cretaceous to Paleocene D1 Sequence are overlain by mudstones\, paleosols\, and fluvial and overbank deposits of the latest Paleocene to early Eocene D2 Sequence. An unconformity spanning 8 million years separates the sequences. We will discuss the two pulses of Laramide mountain building\, with episodic displacement along thrust faults bounding the Front Range\, that are recorded in these sequences. Another focus will be the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)\, which took place approximately 56 million years ago and occurs within the D2 Sequence. \nThis will be a family-friendly trip along mostly flat trails. Running shoes or sandals are perfectly adequate footwear. Be aware that after a rain\, trails can be muddy. \nCarpooling is highly recommended. One group will leave the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at 8:30 a.m. and another group will leave the Light Rail Station at Santa Fe and Mineral at 8:45 a.m. Be prepared for a 1.5 to 2 hour drive one way. If you prefer to drive on your own\, please meet at the main (north) parking lot at 29950 Paint Mine Road NO LATER than 11:00 a.m. This is the only Park location with restrooms. \nBring your own lunch\, snacks\, and plenty of water or sports drinks. No water is available in the Park. Be prepared for hot and dry and/or cool and rainy weather. Sunscreen\, sun hat\, long-sleeved shirt if sun sensitive\, rain jacket\, and a light fleece or sweatshirt are recommended. Rock hammers are NOT allowed in the Park. We anticipate the trip will take approximately 3 to 4 hours before heading back to Denver. \nCost is $25 for RMS-SEPM members\, $30 for nonmembers\, and $10 for additional family members and students. Proceeds will be used for the RMS-SEPM student scholarship funds.
